Getting Started with Voltaire - User

3.3 Sets
A Set is a collection or group of Items.
Sets
There are 3 kinds of Sets in the Voltaire system: the "All" Set, "Smart Sets," and "User Sets."
The All Set - "All Artworks," "All Contacts," etc. - is every Item of whatever Source you're in. The All Set folder is dark blue.
Smart Sets are system-defined Sets. Smart Set folders are medium blue.
An example of a Smart Set is all Artworks that were added in the last 7 days (this Set is called "Recent Additions"). Another example is Artworks that are part of "Current Consignments In." You can not add Items to Smart Sets directly, but as you change information in your system the contents of these Sets will change. For example, as you create Consignments, Artworks will be added to "Current Consignments In" or "Current Consignments Out" Smart Sets.
A User Set is any Set created by any User. User Set folders are white. These Sets are created by using the commands "New Items Set..." or "New Set with Selected Items..." from the Sets menu (where "Item" is "Artworks" from the Artworks Source, "Contacts" from the Contacts Source, etc.), or by Control-clicking (Moac OS X) or right-clicking (Windows) on the Item in the Item listbox.
User Set, Contextual Menu
An example of a User-defined Set is a Set named "Hold for Basel Miami" created by a User of the system.
the Set dialog
After creating the Set, you add Items to a Set by using the "Add Selected Items to Set" menu item in the Sets menu, or (Mac OS X only) dragging the Items to the Set. Alternately, you can create a Set using the current selection, by selecting "New Set with Selected Items..." from the Sets menu.
Items can be removed from Sets by selected "Remove Selected Items from Set..." from the Sets menu.

Note that what you see in any particular set is further filtered by whatever your selection criteria are - see the section 3.6 Simple Searches for information.
